What is love?

Updated: Jan 24, 2022

Love, as defined by Merriam-Webster is "strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties" and "warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion".

While I agree with the dictionary, I look at love another way. This Sunday my pastor mentioned a quote. I can't remember who he said it was from, but it went something like this: "The last time you loved somebody was the last time you sacrificed for them."

Think about it. When was the last time you sacrificed for someone you say you love?

When we put it like that, we are awful at loving. You may be protesting right now saying "I sacrificed such and such for someone just recently!" but what did you sacrifice today?

When was the last time you gave up your time to do something for someone or help them out? When was the last time you gave something to someone else because they needed it? When did you last love?

Love is sacrifice, devotion, putting someone else first. Love isn't a romantic infatuation. It's a commitment to another and putting their needs above your own.

Christ is the ultimate example of this. Dying and being separated from His Father. Paying for my sins and yours. Loving us.

Could your family say you love them? Could your friends? Would people describe you as a loving person?

Naturally, I am not a loving person. I would rather have my own way than step aside for someone else. But I am called to be an example of Christ's love for me.

So, Christian, are you being an example of love this season? Are you showing the love that has been given to you?

And unbeliever, it's not too late! You can still accept His gift! His love extends to you and He wants you to join him!

February is the month of love. Will you spend it loving others or yourself?

It is so true that love is a commitment and requires sacrifice. I need to remember this more often.
