Trapped: A Poem

“I’m a princess in a castle,

Trapped by expectations.”

“I’m a peasant in the field,

Trapped by crops and seasons.”

We both have friends and family,

Who surround us day by day.

But we both feel trapped

By what we do and say.

“I’m a merchant’s daughter,

Trapped by vice and greed.”

“I’m a convict’s daughter,

Trapped by reputation.”

We both have looks upon us,

Who wonder why we stay.

But we are trapped

By what they do and say.

We four are wearied

Because of other’s views

On our families and our rank,

On what we say and do.

“I’m a princess in a castle,

Loved by my Father.”

“I’m a peasant in the field,

Watching my prayers’ yield.”

“I’m a merchant’s daughter,

Selling love and grace.”

I’m a convict’s daughter,

And I know I have a place.

Held in love and grace from One

Who looks beyond the traps,

Of culture, class, and reputation.”

We once were trapped by sin and guilt,

Others’ and our own.

But now we’re saved and have a place,

In His heavenly home.

We are held in mercy and grace,

By His own Son’s death,

We are given a place.
